They weren’t always like this, or rather, they suppose they weren’t.

Bred from the same soil, they were raised to stand tall and fearless and proud. “It’s the Irish in you,” their father would say in a rare moment of sobriety, but secretly they knew it took a strong backbone to evade hot pokers and sharp tongues. They stood together then, in their years of youth, supporting the other when being tough just wasn’t enough.

But somehow, they grew into two very different men — Enoch’s charisma could halt an army and sway a crowd of voters, while Elias’s fists gave way to a career that dabbled less in law and more in enforcement.

Their paths rarely ever met, but their roots were always entangled — a reminder of boys they used to be.

“How are the kids?” he asks in a rare moment when there are no orders to give or blood to be spilt.

“Peachy,” Eli would respond, cigarette perched between his lips, Daniel fucking Webster still ringing fresh in his ears. He doesn’t say that his oldest boy had won the Spelling Bee at school, or that one of the girls lost her first tooth the other day. He doesn’t say these things, because he’s learned they are no longer what they were.

They are brothers, but the boys inside died after their first taste of blood.
