i totally get your post about gillian, even though my opinion is completely opposite. just wanted to add that in the director’s commentary, the director says that jimmy wanted gillian just as badly as gillian wanted jimmy. nobody was forced into anything. and criticizing her…
Great comment.
Who cares if it’s wrong or right. Since when did we watch HBO shows cus they were morally right?!
It had to happen, it’s been alluded to since the start. I applaud the makers for putting it in, but also that whole blurry thing - the viewer can choose to believe what actually happened. If you choose to believe they had sex, that’s on you bro.

Well first of all I think it’s pretty clear that they did have sex - I don’t think that Jimmy would have had such an emotional reaction (i.e. he dropped out of college, cut off all contact with his mother, and joined the army because he no longer cared if he lived or died) if something pretty significant hadn’t happened between him.
I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with the show or the development of the characters because this happen - I agree that this has been implied since the start. My issue is people who continue to loyally argue that Gillian was not in the wrong. This is not a moral gray area. Regardless of the traumas that happened in Gillian’s past, she was wrong to do this to Jimmy. While it is certainly understandable that she has a fucked up view on relationships and men and life in general, what she did isn’t justifiable.

CADAVEROUS CONFECTIONARY: People continuing to stan for Gillian: ›
I get that she was a victim. I get that. What happened to Gillian was horrifying and while it, to an extent, explains why she ~is the way she is~ it doesn’t justify what she has done and is still doing.
I stopped feeling sorry for her when she continues the cycle of abuse that was…
I’ve seen a disturbing number of people who have posted pics of the two of them with comments like “otp” or “gillian is fierce” etc etc etc or who have said that Jimmy “wanted” what happened between them because he beat up his professor yadda yadda. Yeah, a lot of people dislike Gillian but honestly most of the hate I’ve seen for her after this last episode has more to do with her calling Richard a “simpleton” than the fact that she sexually abused her child.
wrongs30men asked: re. Gillian: it astounds me anyone argues anything different. can you imagine if the genders were reversed, if someone said "Gerry's" daughter "Jenny" REALLY WANTED IT? oh my actual god.
Oh my, you are so right! I think it plays into the idea that men can’t be sexually victimized the same way that women can - when in reality, just because she’s a female doesn’t mean that Gillian isn’t in a position of power over Jimmy, and just because Jimmy may have experienced some kind of arousal doesn’t make it less wrong or awful that Gillian used that against him.

Well, here’s the thing - I don’t “hate” Gillian or even necessarily think that she is evil per ser. I understand that Gillian was victimized when she was a child, and that has understandably and irrevocably shaped her life. What happened to Gillian was in no way shape or form her fault.
HOWEVER I want to point out that the idea that Jimmy “wants her just as much as she wants him” is all sorts of problematic because Gillian raised Jimmy to look at her that way. From the time that he was a tiny child to the time when he is a grown-up trying to form his own relationships independent of her, Gillian has quite literally poisoned his mind and done her damndest to make sure that he is dependent on her. Now, you can reason that she does this because Jimmy is the only person who has been “hers” and/or not abandoned her in her entire life and she wants to keep it that way BUT THAT IS NOT JUSTIFICATION FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING YOUR OWN CHILD. I don’t for one second believe this was the first instance of something like this happening between the two of them (Hello, “when he was a baby I used to kiss his little winky”).
The fact of the matter is that just because Jimmy seems or thinks that he’s “into it” in the moment doesn’t mean that Gillian was in the right or that Jimmy mentally and emotionally consented to what they were doing. Gillian is still his mother, and Gillian still should have stopped the situation. Instead, because of her own selfish and twisted desires to keep Jimmy as “hers” she took advantage of her own child and did to him exactly what the Commodore did to her.

I stopped feeling sorry for her when she continues the cycle of abuse that was perpetuated upon her and then began to victimize her own son, thus emotionally crippling Jimmy and royally fucking up his entire life/psyche.
Sure, Gillian has moments of being a fierce bitch and again I’m not downplaying the fact that she went through some horrible shit, and also that she had a baby when she was literally only a child herself. I GET ALL OF THAT.
Guys, this isn’t a sexy relationship. It is the same thing as shipping 13-year old Gillian with 50+ year old Commodore. Jimmy is a victim. I’ve never been terribly fond of Gillian’s character, and I think that this episode finally made it clear why, and vocalized all the horrible, toxic, fucked-up qualities that make up her relationship with her son.
